What’s the Social Issue?

Most information out there about trafficking in persons (TIP) is too convoluted and academic, making it hard to digest for the average person. They struggle to grasp or relate to the problem, often misunderstanding it completely. As cross-border trafficking cases rise in Malaysia, it’s crucial for the public to have clear, solid info so they can keep themselves and their loved ones safe.

The Challenge

Available information on TIP is often too technical and not designed for at-risk communities. Alongside misleading media portrayals, this means the public often doesn't recognise common forms of trafficking, leaving them vulnerable as traffickers’ tactics continue to evolve.

What We Did

01

Beyond the Feed Fellowship Programme

In the age of social media, who better to spread a message than an influencer? We gave content creators a platform to become informed advocates of TIP issues.

02

Beyond the Headlines Fellowship Programme

We didn’t leave traditional media behind. We trained media practitioners and journalists to better understand TIP, and to report on the issue with a trauma-sensitive and human-centred approach.

03

National Digital Media Campaign

We spread our message far and wide, using PSA videos (Coming Home Soon, A Tale Within, Break Free), a ton of educational content, and strategic media partnerships (like on the Morning Breakfast Show and JinnyboyTV's Mamak Sessions podcast) to effectively break down the issue for a wider audience.

04

University Roadshow

The youth are the future, right? We engaged creative students at Sunway University, UNIMAS, and Swinburne University of Technology to harness their creative talents to help shape public perception.

05

Finale Event

To wrap it all up, we put together the Tip the Narrative Finale Event. Here, we brought together key stakeholders like the RMP Cybercrime Unit, the Immigration Department, NACSA, and MCMC to showcase achievements and ignite new collaborations in the fight against trafficking.

The Impact

Knowledge is powerful.

Our fellows continue to create content on human trafficking and migrant workers' rights issues far beyond the end of the programme.

Even the more powerful stakeholders took notice.

The Ministry of Communications and the National Strategic Office for the Council of Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (NSO MAPO) recognised the impact our hero video, and are collaborating with us to distribute our hero videos across national TV and radio.

The university students

who took part in our university roadshow programme weren’t just taking notes. They’ve committed their skills in fundraising, copywriting, and video production to anti-trafficking initiatives, turning awareness into real, meaningful action.
