What’s the Social Issue?

Public attitudes in Malaysia towards migrant workers remain largely negative, with many perceiving them as unnecessary or a drain on the economy. Discrimination rooted in these views limits migrant workers’ access to safety, fair treatment, and legal aid.

The Challenge

When dealing with human issues, a human-centric approach is necessary. However, for law students especially, there is a noticeable gap in education around trauma-informed and gender-sensitive legal practice. Without the proper training required to handle vulnerable clients, future legal professionals risk perpetuating harm or failing to advocate effectively for justice. Also, with youths often engaging in social causes via digital content, it can be hard for some campaigns to stand out, and they risk being seen as irrelevant or repetitive.

What We Did

01

We used a three-pronged approach

Grounded in Communication for Development (C4D), including online and in-person town hall sessions, a 5-month law student fellowship, and targeted social media engagement. The town halls worked to encourage youth participation, while the fellowship equipped law students with the necessary knowledge and practical legal skills, supported by workshops, mentorships, and direct interaction with women migrant workers. We then used content generated from these offline engagements to drive a sustained, inclusive social media campaign designed to amplify the voices of migrant women.

What are the immediate outcomes after the course?

30 fellows from law faculties across universities

in the Klang Valley completed the Advoc8 Legal Affairs Fellowship Programme in 2023.

50,728 eyes on our social media campaign.

254 law students from 9 law faculties

across Peninsular Malaysia participated in the Advoc8 On The Road town hall sessions.

The Impact

3 of our fellows

Wong Xin Yi, Jasmin Tan, and Dakshina Panneer Selvan, co-authored a research paper titled "Migrant Worker’s Rights in Malaysia: The Challenges and Limitations", which was published in the Current Law Journal. Their work was guided by lawyer mentor, Anis Sohaimi.

Some of our fellows continue to demonstrate a strong commitment

to migration issues, advocating within their circles of friends and university peers. Notably, one fellow will be pursuing further studies in International Humanitarian Law.

Thanks to the positive reception

we have launched the second edition of our programme in 2025! This year’s edition features a stronger focus on the fellowship component.
