What’s the Social Issue?

The perception of TVET is often negative, viewed as a less prestigious form of education or as a backup option for students who are unable to pursue academic programs. So, we needed to shift the perception towards TVET as a valuable educational pathway that prepares students for the workforce and boosts Malaysia’s economy by producing a highly skilled workforce.

The Challenge

A general lack of awareness on the value and importance of TVET, as well as biased views towards the prestige of TVET when compared to academic programs. This, coupled with a lack of information about the range of career paths available to those with technical and vocational skills, leads to the perception that TVET offers limited career opportunities.

What We Did

01

The “Young Futuremakers Malaysia” project (2022 - 2023)

was a collaborative project between the Standard Chartered Foundation and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) focused on improving the employability of young women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in Malaysia. The aim was to help young women from B40 or low-tier M40 groups with the target of up/reskilling training and employment opportunities in the food operations and services sector.

02

Here’s where we came in:

We launched a physical and online public awareness campaign to reach our intended beneficiaries, encouraging our intended beneficiaries to register with the TVET institutions or government agencies for up/reskilling training!

What are the immediate outcomes after the course?

250 participants from various learning institutions

in Selangor and Kedah attended the physical sessions for the programme ‘Cita Rasa Masa Depan‘ (A Taste of the Future) to gain a deeper understanding about TVET education.

5,574 viewers across 7 Instagram and Facebook live sessions.

The topics covered provided insights into the food operations and services sectors from various industry experts and were targeted towards parents and youths.

The Impact

We kept the ball rolling

with a Telegram channel created to broadcast monthly updates and information to the beneficiaries including education and employment opportunities, upskilling, and salary trends and career progression in the food services industry, so they could stay up to date with important info.
